What formulas are used to calculate volume for Ejection fraction and other values in a long axis B-mode LV trace vs. short axis M-mode LV trace? Which formula is best?
Short axis M-mode uses the teicholz equation to calculate volumes and the long axis uses a modified Simpsons method of disks formula. We recommend choosing one method and being consistent with data analysis. ASE guidelines recommend the B-mode long axis view, but many publications use the M-mode short axis for systolic calculations.
