Software Overview

VevoStrain™ Advanced Analysis Software for Regional and Global Cardiovascular Wall Motion Tracking

VevoStrain™ software is the only commercial strain package optimized for assessing cardiac function in preclinical rodent studies. Optimized for use with the Vevo® 2100 high-frequency ultrasound system, this advanced post-processing tool provides the preclinical researcher with multi-measurement capabilities in the assessment of myocardial abnormalities and therapeutic interventions. Features such as global strain and time-to-peak analyses assess early biomarkers for understanding disease processes & serve as the first step towards clinical translation of therapeutics.

a)   b)
VevoStrain wall motion analysis on normal (a) and infarct (b) model in rats. Regular and synchronous wall motion is seen in the normal rat with all portions of the wall moving either towards or away from the center, in a radial manner; while in the infarct model the movement is irregular and not in synchrony.

VevoStrain software is a new quantification tool available with the Vevo 2100 system, which uses B-Mode speckle-tracking analysis to track wall motion abnormalities. This tool provides both regional and global wall motion tracking, offering quantification of the velocity of the walls, displacement, strain, strain rate and time to peak analysis.

Parametric Imaging and Velocity Data

VevoStrain software generates parametric graphs of velocity data, as well as anatomical M-Mode tracings of the heart (bottom left hand corner).

Radial velocity data for normal (a) and heart failure (b) mouse model displayed for 48 heart parameter points. Synchronous velocity can be seen in the healthy mouse heart, while slight deviations are present in the infarct heart.

Time-to-Peak Analysis

Time-to-peak is the amount of time following the electric stimulus responsible for contracting the heart, where the movement reaches its maximum, or when looking specifically at strain, where the strain reaches its maximum.

VevoStrain Time-to-Peak analysis, showing synchronous and dyssynchonous velocity components in (a) healthy and (b) heart failure rats, respectively.

Quantification Tools

Quantification of:
  • Wall motion abnormalities
    • Degree of wall motion
    • Distinguish true contraction (deformation) from only motion (tethering)
  • Dyssynchrony (delayed ventricular activation and contraction)
    • Identification, location and quantification
  • Myocardial mechanics
    • 2D Contour tracking
    • Longitudinal and radial velocities
    • Circumferential and radial velocities
    • Longitudinal and radial strain and strain rate
    • Longitudinal and radial displacements
    • Time to Peak analysis
    • Time measurement

Features & benefits:

  • Non-angle dependant motion scanning
  • Highly reproducible results

State of the Art Technology

VevoStrain software is emerging as the new state of the art assessment tool for quantifying myocardial mechanical function & deformation may even replace Doppler tissue imaging (Geyer et al., 2010)

Tracking algorithm

The tracking algorithm is used for border-tracking and vector generation, producing a series of graphs including velocity, strain and strain rate.

Based on:

  • Speckle analysis
  • Aortic valve plane motion
  • Spatial coherence
  • Periodic motion
  • Border tracking
