Dr. Gambhir is a recognized world leader in the area of molecular imaging of cancer. His laboratory at Stanford University is at the center of bringing together scientists from different disciplines in order to advance the field of molecular imaging. His lab pioneered the use of reporter gene technologies for living animals and then applied this to imaging gene therapy, imaging cell trafficking, developing mouse models of cancer, stem cell imaging, imaging of intra-cellular networks, as well as several other areas. He has also translated several approaches to clinical molecular imaging.
His research interests are directed at the development of techniques to study various molecular/biochemical events taking place in living animals and humans, in their natural state, at the cellular and sub-cellular levels.
Dr. Gambhir is the Director of the Stanford School of Medicine Program in Molecular Imaging. He is a Professor of Radiology and Bioengineering and Head of the Division of Nuclear Medicine. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. in Biomathematics and M.D., both from University of California Los Angeles.
His accomplishments include
over 260 published papers and more than 16 patents awarded or pending and he has been lauded with awards both nationally and internationally including the 2008 Tesla Medal presented by the United Kingdom Royal College of Radiologists in England for his work in Multimodality Molecular Imaging of Living Subjects as well as the Paul C. Aebersold Award (2006) by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and the Hounsfield Medal (2006) by Imperial College London.
